Manufacturing environments depend on repeatable movement, controlled process flow and stable production timing. When a motor trips unexpectedly, the result is seldom limited to one machine. A single conveyor, fan, compressor or pump fault can interrupt upstream and downstream processes, delay production, increase maintenance pressure and create avoidable operational risk.
The KD Series Relay supports manufacturing reliability by combining selectable motor protection functions with practical setup options, event recording and fault visibility. The relay is designed for conveyor, compressor, crusher, fan and pump motor protection, with features such as thermal overload, locked rotor, running stall or jam protection, unbalanced current or single phasing, earth leakage or earth fault protection, short-circuit protection, voltage and frequency protection, insulation lock-out, event recording and Profibus communication.

Manufacturing plants often operate under demanding conditions. Motors may run for long shifts, stop and start repeatedly, carry variable loads, operate near dust, moisture or heat, and form part of linked production lines where one fault can affect the entire process.
The KD Series Relay is relevant where maintenance and engineering teams need more than basic overload protection. It helps detect the warning signs behind common motor-related problems, including load changes, phase imbalance, current abnormalities, insulation deterioration, jammed equipment, underload conditions and repeated starts.
NewElec’s manufacturing industry page highlights typical manufacturing and material handling applications such as conveyor belts, industrial pumps, cranes and fan motor protection, all of which depend on reliable motor control and protection to reduce breakdown risk and keep operations productive.

The KD Series Relay is well suited to manufacturing and processing environments where motor-driven equipment supports production flow, ventilation, movement, pumping, compression or material handling.
Conveyors and Material Handling Lines – The KD Series supports locked rotor, running stall or jam protection and current monitoring to help detect these conditions before damage escalates.
Fans and Ventilation Motors – protection features that help identify abnormal operating conditions and support safer operation.
Compressors – The KD Series helps protect against overload, locked rotor, starts-per-hour issues and electrical abnormalities that can place stress on the motor.
Pumps in Manufacturing Processes – The KD Series includes minimum load or underload protection, making it useful where motor load changes can indicate process issues.
Crushers, Mills and Process Equipment – Protection against locked rotor, stall, overload and current imbalance helps reduce damage and downtime.

A motor trip is often treated as the problem, but in many cases it is only the symptom. The real issue may sit inside the process, the load, the supply, the cable, the motor, the starter or the mechanical equipment being driven.
Common manufacturing motor issues include:
The KD Series Relay is designed for manufacturing plants where motor-driven equipment must run reliably, safely and with minimal interruption. From conveyors and fans to compressors, crushers and pumps, the KD Series helps protect critical motors against the electrical and mechanical conditions that often lead to trips, damage, downtime and unnecessary maintenance.
A conveyor carrying raw material or finished goods begins to trip repeatedly during production. Instead of simply resetting the starter, the KD Series can help detect whether the issue is overload, jam, current imbalance or another fault condition.
A process extraction fan starts drawing abnormal current due to blocked filters, damaged bearings or airflow restriction. The KD Series provides protection against overload and abnormal operating conditions that could lead to motor damage.
A compressor begins cycling more frequently and placing stress on the motor. Starts-per-hour limitation and overload protection help reduce damage linked to repeated starts and high-load operation.
A process or utility pump runs at reduced load due to low flow, dry-running risk or suction-side restriction. Minimum load or underload protection helps detect abnormal process conditions that may not be visible from current overload alone.
A crusher, mill or material reduction process encounters a jam. Locked rotor, stall and overload protection help reduce the risk of severe motor damage and extended downtime.
In a manufacturing plant, downtime is rarely isolated. A failed motor can delay production, increase overtime, disrupt delivery schedules and put pressure on engineering teams. The KD Series Relay helps reduce this risk by giving protection teams a clearer view of what the motor is experiencing.
Instead of only responding after a fault, manufacturing teams can use the KD Series as part of a more disciplined protection and maintenance strategy. The relay supports better fault tracing, more informed reset decisions and improved protection settings for different motor-driven applications.
KD Series Motor Protection Relay
For low-voltage motor protection in manufacturing applications, including pumps, conveyors, compressors, crushers, fans and general plant machinery.
Used for earth leakage and earth fault protection. Available kit options include CBCT components such as 43 mm, 63 mm, 104 mm and 150 mm ID options, depending on the selected motor range and relay configuration.
The KD Series can also be supported with a range of expansion modules and accessories to improve setup, monitoring and usability. These include an insulation lockout converter for insulation lockout protection, a USB to RS232 converter and KD laptop cable for relay configuration, and free product software for setup. Display options include the KD-FLED remote display unit for door-mounted indication, the KD RDU 420 remote display with a 4 x 20 LCD screen, and the KD MMI 420 event recorder kit for portable display and event recording. A KD voltage converter is also available for higher voltage applications.
The KD Series Relay is used to protect motor-driven manufacturing equipment such as conveyors, fans, compressors, crushers, pumps and other process machinery. It helps detect electrical and load-related fault conditions that can damage motors or stop production.
Manufacturing plants rely on continuous equipment availability. If a conveyor, fan, pump or compressor motor fails, it can interrupt production, delay output and increase repair costs. Motor protection helps reduce this risk by detecting abnormal operating conditions before they cause major damage.
Yes. The KD Series includes locked rotor protection, running stall or jam protection and vectorial stall detection. These functions are useful where a conveyor or driven machine may become mechanically restricted.
Yes. The KD Series includes unbalanced current and single phasing protection, helping protect motors from supply or connection-related conditions that can cause overheating and premature failure.

In manufacturing, every minute counts. When a motor fails unexpectedly, production comes to a halt, deadlines are missed, and costs skyrocket, one process affects another where that can cause an extensive clean-up process keeping production at a halt…
Motor size helps determine the electrical range, but the application determines the operating risk. A pump, conveyor, fan and crusher may require different protection priorities even if the motor ratings are similar. Load behaviour, environment, criticality and visibility requirements should all influence relay selection…
